How Important It Is to Produce Seeds for The Aquaculture of Bivalve Molluscs?

  Abstract Fishery products are an important part of the diet in many countries of the world, where demand increases proportionally with population growth. The greater request of seafood products refers to fish, however, the production and harvest of molluscs, especially bivalves, will also play a key role in satisfying this growing market. To meet this demand, it is necessary to have an available number of organisms, which may be the product of either fishing or aquaculture. Nevertheless, there are not enough studies about the biological and ecological characteristics of these resources that guarantee maintainable production. This makes it difficult to carry out sustainable and adequate exploitation of the natural wealth. Distribution of Benthic Foraminifera in the Marine Estuary of the Guadalquivir River (SW Spain): A Preliminary Report

  Abstract Three zones are differentiated in the marine sector of the Guadalquivir estuary (SW Spain), according to a multidisciplinary analysis (water, sediment, foraminifera). Both salinities and pH increase from the innermost areas (zone 1: Ammonia tepida) to the mouth (zone 3: Ammonia beccarii), with an intermediate zone 2 (Ammonia beccarii-Triloculina trigonula). Both density and diversity are low to very low, except near the transition between zones 2 and 3. Planktonic foraminifera decrease sea Ward from zone 1 to zone 3. Ecological Conditions and Benthic Macroinvertebrates of Lake Tinishu Ababya, Ethiopia

  Abstract The ecological condition of Lake Tinishu Abaya was assessed using benthic macroinvertebrates as well. The results from this aspect of the study showed that a total of 5735 benthic macroinvertebrate specimens comprising of 23 taxa were collected from all the study sites. There was spatial effect on the number and distribution of benthic individuals (p <0.05). It was high at Dacha riverside (n=2089) followed by Bobodo riverside (n=1145), Reference site (n= 963), Badober riverside (n= 859), and Maingate side (n=679). The abundance of benthic communities significantly varied between the study seasons (p<0.05). Higher individuals were observed during the wet season (n=3583) than in the dry season (n=2152).   Abstract The common spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas, Fabricius, 1787) is an iconic species of the Mediterranean Sea. Despite the existence of data on the artisanal fishery of P. elephas in the Mediterranean Sea and particularly in Corsica, knowledge on the biology and life history traits of this iconic species is still lacking. Food and Feeding Biology of Commercially Important Freshwater Eel, Mastacembelus armatus (LACEPÈDE, 1800) from the Ganga River, India

  Abstract Food and feeding biology of freshwater zig-zag eel Mastacembelus armatus (LACEPÈDE, 1800) was investigated from the Allahabad waters of the river Ganga from April 2015 to March 2016. The Stomach contents of 326 individuals of M. armatus were collected monthly from the Daraganj fish landing centre located on the bank of the river Ganga. The composition of food content was expressed as percentage of the frequency of occurrence (%Oi) and percentage of the volume (Vi). The main food items were estimated by Index of preponderance (Ii). The three major food items of M. armatus were the small sized teleosts, insects, and molluscs. The analyses of the relative gut length (RGL) revealed it carnivorous type of feeding habit. The Gastro-Somatic Index (GaSI) in the male and female ranged between 2.65 and 4.41 with a mean of 3.42 ± 0.09 and 2.84 and 3.43 with a mean value of 3.05 ± 0.03. Biological Characteristics of Jade Perch (Scortum Barcoo)

  Abstract Jade perch ( Scortum Barcoo ) is a highly nutritious fresh water bass species native in Australia and now being a promising candidate for aquaculture in China. To provide a fundamental biological basis for future germplasm improvement and exploitation of jade perch, biological characteristics of jade perch, including propagation, morphological and genetic characters were analyzed in this study. Jade perch becomes sexually mature at four-year-old. Zygotes of jade perch are transparent, buoyant, and swell upon absorption of water to up to 2.1±0.3mm in diameter. At a water temperature of 27.5±2°C, zygoteshatched 21-26h after fertilization. Comparison of morphological characters between two- and six-month-old jade perch revealed that the proportion of the head with respect to the body decreased significantly (P<0.05), while the proportion of abdominal fat deposits increased significantly (P<0.05).   Abstract Phylogeographic studies of Penaeid shrimps have revealed genetic divergence among populations between known biogeographic barriers in the western Indian Ocean, between the Bay of Bengal and the south-eastern Africa, and across the Sunda-Shelf and the Isthmus of Kra. The phylogeographic lineages identified should be considered as evolutionary significant units (ESUs) or conservation units and should be considered in the management of the Penaeids, both in aquaculture and fisheries in order to maintain the large diversity within the species in the Indo-Pacific region. An Overview of the Freshwater Crabs (Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae) of the Western Ghats, India

  Abstract The Western Ghats has been well studied for freshwater crabs among the regions of the Indian subcontinent. Several studies on the Western Ghats crabs notwithstanding, their actual diversity is still incompletely known. The previous data on their diversity seems to be erroneous. The freshwater crabs of the Western Ghats are revisited to update the information on their diversity, distribution, endemism, and conservation, which include 888 locality records from 46 publications. The updated data comprises 62 crab species in 18 genera of the family Gecarcinucidae, including recognition of two new records from the Western Ghats: Oziotelphusa biloba and Oziotelphusa ravi. The Western Ghats crabs contribute nearly half the diversity of the Indian freshwater crabs and more than two-thirds the diversity of the Indian gecarcinucid crabs. Manifestations of Photosynthesis in the Evolution of the Global Carbon Cycle

  Abstract The applicability of the photosynthesis equation to the analysis of the changes of global carbon cycle main participants (carbon dioxide, atmospheric oxygen, sedimentary organic carbon) is shown. Photosynthesis is manifested in antiphase changes in the average concentrations of CO 2 and O 2 in the atmosphere and in-phase changes in the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere and the rate of burial of organic matter in the sediment. Due to the regulatory role of photosynthesis, the global carbon cycle spontaneously moves to a stationary state, what makes it possible to estimate the amount of buried organic matter in the earth’s crust. Nursery of the Black Tiger Shrimp Penaeus Monodon Postlarvae in a Biofloc System with Different Carbon Sources

  Abstract The experiment comprised five treatments including a control without any organic carbon addition and four different carbon sources applied in biofloc system namely sugar cane molasses, fine rice bran, cassava powder and combination of rice bran and cassava at an estimated C:N ratio of 12. The nursery phases were assessed in tanks with a volume of 450 L for 30 days. The black tiger shrimp ( Penaeus monodon ) postlarvae with an average weight of 0.01 g were randomly stocked at density of 600 Ind. m-3. Results showed that carbohydrate addition resulted in better water quality and shrimp performance than that in the control system. Among the different carbon sources used, cassava and molasses have slightly increased the survival of shrimp. Overall, use of sugar cane molasses as carbon source seem to be more effective that gave better water quality, survival and production of shrimp. Modeling of Small Sea Floaters in the Central Mediterranean Sea: Seasonality of At--Sea Distributions

  Abstract Floating marine debris represent a threat to marine and coastal ecology. Since the Mediterranean basin is one of the highly impacted regions, both by the coastal pollution as well as from sea traffic, the potential harm of a floating pollution on the marine ecology could be overwhelming in this area. Our study area covers the central Mediterranean crossing that connects the western and eastern Mediterranean and is one of the areas impacted by a high intensity of sea traffic. To identify regions in the central Mediterranean that could be more exposed by high concentration of floating marine pollutants we use Leeway model for lower windage small-size particles. We perform numerical simulation of a large ensemble of Lagrangian particles that approximate at-sea debris. Uncertainty Quantification of Sea Waves - An Improved Approach

  Abstract Sea waves are important dynamic loadings for the design of offshore structures. Casual observations will indicate that the sea waves are very unpredictable and may not be modeled deterministically. To capture the unpredictable nature of the sea waves, they are generally expressed in terms of a joint probability density function of mean zero crossing period Tz and the significant wave height Hs. Estimation of parameters of the joint distribution can be very challenging, particularly considering the scarcity of data. The joint probability density function (PDF) of Tz and Hs is generally represented as the multiplication of a conditional distribution for Tz given Hs and the marginal distribution of Hs. The estimation of parameters of the joint PDF is addressed in this paper. A Review of Recent Status on Mudskippers (Oxudercine Gobies) in Indonesian Waters

 Abstract The status of valid species and distributional range of mudskippers (oxudercine gobies) in Indonesian waters are reviewed here. There are 24 species of mudskippers recently recorded. Refered to seven largest islands region in Indonesia, Sumatra has largest number of mudskippers (14 species), following Java (12 species, Lesser Sundas (11 species), Kalimantan (9 species), West Papua (9 species), Sulawesi (8 species) and Moluccas (8 species).   Abstract Availability of nutritionally balanced commercial feeds is essential in producing healthy, high-quality aquatic animals. Protein is the most important component of aquaculture feeds. Fish require not only a minimum level of protein but also that the essential amino acids are balanced to meet the requirements of each single one. Histidine is an essential amino acid with several functions including protein synthesis, tissue formation and repair as well as maintenance of osmoregulation and myelin sheaths. It also regulates the immune system and acts as antioxidant in fish. Histidine deficiency depresses growth performance and feed utilization. If in excess, it causes disruption of the balance of dietary amino acids leading to toxicity or extensive necrosis in the epithelial cells. Evaluation of toxicity and lethal concentration (LC50) of silver and selenium nanoparticle in different life stages of the fish Tenualosa ilish (Hamilton 1822)

Abstract The anadromous Tenualosa ilish is the most economically important fish in the world and consequently in Iran. The national fish of Iranian contributes about 12% of the total fish production and about 1% of GDP. About 4,500,000 people are directly involved with the catching for livelihood; around four to five million people are indirectly involved with the trade. The present study aimed to estimate 96hLC 50s of silver and selenium on LC 50 of nanoparticle of silver and selenium in different life stages of the fish T. ilish in the environment experimental. The LC 50 for silver in four stages of fish T. ilish were larvae (0.23ppm), fry (0.45ppm), juvenile (0.90ppm) and fingerling (1.45ppm), respectively.
