An Unusual and Massive Bloom of Tetraselmis Sp. in the Valparaiso Bay, Chile- Juniper Publishers

  Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Abstract An intense bloom of Tetraselmis sp., producing strong water discoloration was observed from December 28th of 2005 through January 10th of 2006 in the Valparaiso Bay (32º 57’S; 71º 33’W). Blooms of Tetraselmis sp. have never been reported in this bay, or along the coast of Chile. The confluence of a series of environmental conditions observed before and during the bloom such as: high solar radiation, anomalous UV radiation levels, high sea surface temperatures, water stratification and high nutrient concentrations may have contributed to the development of this unique event. The impact that coastal defence structures cause in the intertidal community is further favoured by the anthropic pressures produced in heavily populated areas (such as pollution or the collection of intertidal organisms). Among these, the effect of artificial lights on intertidal communities is practically unknown, even though that the behaviour of many intertidal vagile organisms is synchronized with circatidal and circadian rhythms. In recent years recreational saltwater fishing license sales have exceeded a count of 1.5 million annually . With millions of people taking to the water every year to try their luck in some of the best fishing waters around the water, there is a significant need for angler education about the legal, ethical, and sustainable implications that surround angling in south Florida. Shown in  Figure 1 , the Miami Science Barge (the Barge) has been docked on the waters of Biscayne Bay just north of downtown Miami since April of 2016.
