  Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Abstract The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has a congressional mandate and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) both have mandates to assess oceanic wind and oceanic wave energy and power resources and impacts; both structural and potentially ecological. Oceanic offshore winds and waves are viewed as being relatively steady sources of energy. However assessments of the amount of the wind resources and wave resources in U.S. coastal and oceanic environments have not been evaluated and have only been estimated by several rudimentary modeling efforts.   Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Introduction The Tagus River is the longest waterway in the Iberian Peninsula (1,007km) with source in Albarracin mountain- Spain and mouth in a wide estuary near Lisbon - Portugal. Throughout 32% of its waterway Tagus River influences the Portuguese territory with several irrigation dams and hydroelectric power plants. For decades, this river has received environmental pollutants from increased activities in industrial, domestic and agricultural systems, and also from a Spanish nuclear power plant that is 37 years old. This nuclear power plant is about to 100km far from the Portuguese border. For all those reasons it is very important to know the level of contamination of aquatic animals living in Tagus River.   Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Abstract The Heavy mineral analysis of the beach sediment is one of the finest ways to interpret the presence of the placer deposits in the coast. The point counting method is a widely used technique, which is employed for the quantitative analysis of heavy minerals. Nevertheless, this method is not applicable in case of large scale volumetric or spatial investigations as the surficial sediments occupy an inaccurate space due to its irregular grain size. Therefore, porosity is an important feature that has to be considered for the analyzing the quantitative distribution of the placer minerals present in the surface sediments. This paper highlights the effect of porosity in the heavy mineral distribution with respect to the grain size.
