Determination of Heavy Metals in Water, Fish and Sediment from Ureje Water Reservoir- Juniper Publishers

  Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Abstract The concentrations of Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr) and Manganese (Mn) in water, sediment and selected fish samples from Ureje water reservoir, Ado Ekiti, were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). A total of three samples each of water, sediment, fishes (Hemichromis fasciatus & Hepsetus odoe) were collected and analyzed for heavy metals. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) test at 0.05%. The results showed higher levels of Zn (13.08±0.45mg/g) and Fe (2.10±0.56mg/g) in fish in comparison with other heavy metals examined. Chromium has exceeded the toxicity threshold in the muscle of the fishes in line with WHO standards in food. The blue shark,  Prionace glauca,  is one of the main targets of the shark fishing industry. The application of genetic markers is key to understand the population dynamics and management of elasmobranchii species under fishing pressure. In this study, levels of mitochondrial and nuclear genetic diversity of Eastern Tropical Pacific populations of the blue shark were investigated. Results from both markers show interesting differences. mtDNA analyses indicated no significant population differentiation between population units in the Eastern Tropical Pacific and the Western Pacific. In such a situation an indigenous resource of these are important. The easy extraction of these elements from beach placers has attracted considerable interest. However, mining in beach areas can have a detrimental impact, if suitable measures are not undertaken.
