  Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Abstract The document briefly reviews the current status of statistical monitoring systems for fisheries and aquaculture. Emphasis is placed on small-scale fisheries and on small/medium water systems for freshwater aquaculture. Important sampling aspects such as determination of safe sample size and frequency of sampling are briefly presented and discussed. Also examined are survey operational aspects such as sustainability of data collection schemes and development/maintenance of databases used for the storage of primary data and the preparation of statistical reports. Effects of Dredging Operations on Fishing Sites in the Niger Delta Basin Nigeria- Juniper Publishers

  Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Abstract The study examines the ecological and economic implications of dredging activities on fishing sites in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria. Data from secondary sources were empirically analysed and results show that dredging operations have significant effect on fishing sites. These are revealed by the magnitude of ecological and economic implications to the region, which is reflected by the level of economic value of damage caused by dredging in the area, the number of fishing sites and farm lands affected by the dredging operations. The study concludes that even though dredging is imperative for the economic survival of the area, there is need for routine studies to be conducted prior to the operations so as to ensure that dredging activities are executed in the most environmentally friendly manner in accordance to international best practices in order to mitigate ecological imbalance in the basin.   Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Abstract Many global aquatic ecosystems, particularly for those in high latitudes, are reported to be under pressure due to warming climate and anthropogenic interference. In this short article, we briefly discuss the two major environmental constraints for an aquatic ecosystem-streamflow and stream temperature, which haven't received enough attention thus with only sparsely available concurrent in-situ measurements across the globe. A novel numerical solution, i.e., the Dominant River-Tracing-based streamflow and Temperature (DRTT) model, is introduced, and it has been developed for the simulations of both daily streamflow and temperature along entire drainage networks for large regions, filling the data gap usually faced by aquatic ecologists.   Juniper Publishers -  Journal of Oceanography Abstract The edible green seaweed  Ulva fasciata  which is abundant in Tanzania, is highly nutritious and can therefore help in curbing severe malnutrition currently reported in the country. Seaweeds on the other hand, are reported to be affected by temperature. This study was therefore aimed at investigating the effect of rising temperature on the nutritive value of  Ulva fasciata.  Samples were collected at the Oysterbay shoreline in Dar es Salaam and grown under controlled conditions at the University of Dar es Salaam. Growth rate and selected nutrients (proteins, vitamin A, carbohydrates, iron, phosphorus, calcium and potassium) were determined using standard analytical methods. Data analysis was done using Paleontological statistics (PAST) version 1.27, 1999-2012 package.
