Are the Solar and Battery-Powered Lights used for Dagaa Rastrineobola argentea Fishing a Threat to the Nile Perch Lates niloticus Fishery in Lake Victoria?

Oceanography & Fisheries Open Access Journal Juniper Publishers Authored by: Philemon Nsinda Abstract For decades, the harvesting of Dagaa (Rastrineoboala argentea) from Lake Victoria and other waters bodies relied on lanterns as the primary source of light attraction. Being one of Lake Victoria’s top four economically significant fisheries, Dagaa has a significant impact on the macro- and microeconomics of East African nations. Recent innovation for harvesting Dagaa using solar and battery-power lights, have raised conserns about the sustainability of Nile perch. The current declining Nile perch is associated with the introduction of solar and battery-powered lights. To validate the consern, TAFIRI conducted a Dagaa fishing light research. Dagaa fishing research was conducted in offshore waters around Bwiru in Nyamagana district and questionnaires administered in Ilemela district in May 2022. It was revealed that solar light caught 6 fish species and battery-powe

Existence of Viruses

Oceanography & Fisheries Open Access Journal Juniper Publishers Authored by:  Augustine Ehireme Okonofua Opinion A unique characteristic of viruses is that they are always associated with livings things (cells). This is because they are totally depended upon their hosts existence. This total host dependency makes the study of viruses extremely difficult since the internal characteristics of the host’s cell interferes with observations made. Unlike other micro-organisms like bacteria, viruses cannot be cultivated on a laboratory media because of their host’s dependency. They therefore cannot be cultivated solely in the presence of organic or inorganic nutrient medium. They can only be grown by the use of living cells and tissues. In laboratory conditions this living cells and tissues act as viral culture medium. For the purpose of viral cultivation, the relevant cells or tissue have to be cultivated under laboratory conditions. Therefore, for the growth of bacterio

Fishermen’s Health and Safety in the Northern Tunisian Region (Southeast Mediterranean Sea): Risk Assessment

Image
Oceanography & Fisheries Open Access Journal Juniper publishers Abstract Occupational health and safety is becoming more and more crucial to maintain a safe working environment for all types of vessels in Tunisia as maritime workers are exposed to work hazards on a daily basis. With the aim to respond to this national need, we sought, through this work, to diagnose this problem from two perspectives. On the one hand, we inspected the state of the Tunisian regulations related to the fishing activity. On the other hand, we tried to identify maritime hazards to which the crew might be exposed. To do this, we examined the working conditions of the high seas fishing vessels in the northern region of Tunisia particularly the physical environments (sound, light, heat, humidity) through inspections on board fishing vessels (trawlers). In order to identify the organisms that are involved in the maritime field, we looked at the legislative aspects by examining the archive

Seasonal Floodplain Haor Wetlands in Assam Hotspot in India

Image
Oceanography & Fisheries Open Access Journal Juniper Publishers Authored by  Devashish Kar Abstract The North-Eastern (NE) region of India includes the province of Assam, which provides enough potential for high fish production which can supplement food requirement of the region and could provide answer to the diminishing protein supply. Assam is gifted with innumerable nature’s wealth in the form different kinds of lentic and lotic water bodies. A `Haor’ is a kind of seasonal floodplain wetland which contains water for some time of the year only, particularly, during the rainy season. Definitions of other kinds of wetlands along with details about `Haors’ in the region, have been discussed in the present communication. Keywords: Wetland; Haor; Assam Hotspot; India; Asia Introduction The North-Eastern (NE) region of India, which includes the province of Assam, is typically a difficult topography with undulating terr
